Lesson 23: How to tell me about a case or statute: Date, Hyperlink, Your Point, Text .

Lots of people, especially Ron Fox, tell me breathlessly about a case and then ask me about the case.

The well-asked question is half-answered. Your question, by comparison, is half-asked.

When telling me excitedly about your great find, please provide the following information:

1.         Tell me the year that the opinion was rendered.

2.         Give me a hyperlink to where the case is published on the internet - or send me the entire text of the case.

3.         Tell me you point; what are you trying to prove with this case.

4.         Quote the exact words in the opinion that support your point.

5.         Tell me how you stumbled upon this case/ opinion.

6.         Regarding statutes, rules, ordinances, and other statements of positive law: Don’t let the “date” be an obstacle. Send me a hyperlink to the statute. Send me the text of the statute. Send me the words that you cling to. Tell me your point. Tell me how the text pertains to your point.
