Lesson #5: Checklist for going to court.

You could be going to court to a hearing/ trial or you may be going to court to file papers. The latter may be inefficient because you can file by mail and/ or by email.

 

1.         Pen in pocket.

2.         Business cards or 3 x 5 cards.

4.         Read “How to Talk to the Judge/ What to say in court” at this link: : http://www.circuitlawyer.8m.com/5537.html

5.         Sufficient number of copies of today’s motion. 1 or 2 if you have already filed. Up to 6 if you are filing today.

            a.         One to get file stamped and keep.

            b.         One for the criminal filing window files.

            c.          One to serve on the prosecutor unless it is a motion to quash for usurpation by clerk; they don’t get served.

            d.         One extra to hand to the judge or file as a courtesy copy.

            e.         Another extra to hand to the prosecutor.

            f.          Another extra for your public defender or stand-by lawyer.

6.         Lawyerdude’s telephone number is on the top left corner of page 1 of your motion.

7.         Let somebody else drive if convenient.

8.         Court is a waste of time; can this appearance be avoided?

9.         At court, file your papers at the criminal filing window

            a.         Make sure to get a file stamped copy.

10.       Once in the court room write down on a 3x5 card the names of the players

            a.         Judge

            b.         Court reporter

            c.          Bailiff

            d.         Prosecutor

            e.         Public Defender

            f.          Anybody else you talk to.
