Lesson #9: How to write a Partial Chronology.

It is a habit/ lesson/ method/ way of telling your story. Learn to tell your story this way.

The methodology: Partial chronology. Partial List of Players. Partial List of Documents.

Please begin every paragraph with a date. Or indent the paragraph to show that it is part of the same date as the previous paragraph. If necessary add the time of day. If a lot happened that day then it should be told in the correct order.

Please make a list of the players. List what you know. List their address, telephone number, their role in this story, their email address, web address, fax number, etc.

I need to know the following: who, what, when, where, why, how.

When you debrief please do so in the form of a partial chronology, partial list of documents, and partial list of players.

When you are asking me to do a task then please provide me with the information in the form of a partial chronology, partial list of document, and partial list of players.

The chronology and list of players is the best way to tell the story of your case. Similarly this method is the best way to tell just a PART of your story.

The problem arises because I ask people to debrief. The key is to debrief in chronology order with a list of players who participated in court today. My emphasis is this: The chronology and list of players is an organizational tool that you can use for every story.

Any journalists will recognize that the chronology and list of players is NOT how you write for a newspaper. A newspaper begins with the most important facts. A newspaper story is written so that you can eliminate lines from the end and have a story as long as you want. Sometimes you will see a chronology in a newspaper or magazine discussing a story that has gone on for days or years.

I demand a chronology because many people are incapable of clear writing without lots of guidance. So many people write me a breathless rendition of how this or that is unjust and how they FEEL about it. To that I reply: Just the facts, ma’am.

Then I ask them to re-write and upgrade; write a chronology.

Well, now I see that people accept the chronology demand, but they refuse to see it as a way to tell the update. They regress to their bad old bad writing habits.

One guy comes to mind. Every time he sends me an email he begins with “2007-10-11; 1967; Graduate HS 1985" What a dumbass! I told him to include these items in his dossier. So now he thinks that I want him to tell me when he graduated every time he writes an email.

In addition, this dumbass forgot the rule about making your statement stand independently. Also, I don’t need to know his birthday. “But you requested my birth date in your book under the description of a chronology.”
